I just recently came across a couple of clients that have dry brittle hair and damaged hair with split ends, even though they have stopped using their blowdryer and flat iron. Are you having the same issue with your hair?

I didn't realize what the culprit was until...

My clients hair would not take the color I was putting on her hair and her bleach foils were hot to the touch! We both came to the same thought almost instantly. She had moved to the foothills where she was on well water!!! What does well water contain that will harm your hair? It often contains minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium which have ill effects on your hair.

How do you protect your hair from the effects of well water?

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Install a Water Softener or Filtration System

  • Water Softener: This system can reduce the mineral content in your water, making it less harsh on your hair. It exchanges the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions.

  • Whole House Water Filter: This can filter out various contaminants including iron and other minerals that might damage your hair.

  1. Use Clarifying Shampoo

  • Frequency: Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove mineral buildup from your hair. I suggest using Olaplex Clarifying Shampoo https://amzn.to/3KxCTtc

  • Ingredients: Look for shampoos containing chelating agents like EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) which can bind to minerals and help wash them away.

  1. Chelating Treatments

  • Salon Treatments: Professional chelating treatments are available at salons and can effectively remove mineral buildup. Ask your stylist.

  • Home Treatments: Look for chelating shampoos and conditioners designed specifically to remove minerals. I suggest using Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Collection - Hydrating Hair Care to Protect from Waterborne Elements - Removes Hard Water Deposits & Impurities from Hair https://amzn.to/4eaoaSL

  1. Shower Filter

  • Inline Filter: Install an inline shower filter to reduce the amount of minerals coming into contact with your hair. I suggust using the Aqua Home Shower Filter https://amzn.to/3RjuI7X

  1. Regular Haircuts

By combining these methods, you can mitigate the effects of well water on your hair and maintain its health and appearance. Always mention to your hairstylist that you are using well water so she can take the neccearsy steps to mitigate damage to your hair.
